Back in Kathmandu, the two very competent doctors I’d met said that the Giardia parasite (selfie of the bugger enclosed…) seemed to be eradicated.
They also measured various vital signs and concluded I had hematocrits above 51%, which means I am above the thresholds accepted to partake in the Tour the France and other pro-cycling races! I guess I’ll have to sit out this season 🙂
However, the parasite reeked havoc on my body.
I lost 12kg in about a week! The curve below shows my weight curve with the last 3 years on the x-axis.
No wonder I was bonking after one or two hours and felt severely hypoglycaemic at every effort.
The doctor’s advice was to constantly keep something in my stomach. which has been the most difficult thing to do at altitude. After 48 hours back at a normal lattitudes, I started eating cart loads of food again…but the question was whether I would be able to accumulate enough carbs and proteins to make it through my summit rotation?
